Vogelsang USA introduced the HiCone progressing cavity pump to the North American market in late 2023, a design launched by its parent company in Europe two years prior.

This means, currently, HiCone pumps have been in field testing or with customers for two to three years (globally), and Vogelsang is excited to report that data from side-by-side or replacement installations shows that HiCone pumps are “comfortably capable of providing three times the service life of other PC pumps.” While several trials indicated even longer service intervals were possible, Vogelsang feels the testing, mainly in digester feed and digestate transfer applications, provides enough evidence to say that customers can anticipate that rotor-stator replacement intervals will be in the range of three times longer as compared to current PC pumps in the market.

What’s driving the longer service life?

Vogelsang likes to say, “We’ve cracked the code” on a reliable adjustment system that allows operators to regain pump performance through a simple adjustment. As shown in initial installations, other PC pumps required multiple stator replacements plus a full rotor-stator replacement during the same timeframe in which HiCone only required a single rotor-stator replacement. Beyond cost savings, this cuts out days of maintenance and downtime over the course of the pump's life cycle.

Why did Vogelsang enter the progressing cavity pump market?

In talking to Aaron Renick, VP of sales for Vogelsang USA, who’s had a leadership role in the development of progressing cavity pumps for almost 30 years, he had this to say:

“Vogelsang entered the progressing cavity pump market nearly eight years ago due to the pumping needs of our system solution lines, such as RedUnit (turnkey, multistage grinder, and pump systems). But when deciding to offer a standalone PC pump, we knew we had to offer a revolutionary update, a true value to the end users. Simply being a “me too” in this technology space wasn’t a good investment for us or our customers.

We already knew HiCone had to provide a quick, in-place service design, but what stuck out was the opportunity to have a pump designed to compensate for wear and provide a much longer service life. This is where the conical shape, hence the HiCone name, came from, which is the foundation of the adjustment system. Where other manufacturers had attempted adjustment features, those designs came with notable downsides and questionable results. Vogelsang engineered an ingenious solution to compensating for wear that’s remarkably simple. And in that simplicity, the resulting benefits are more reliable and easier to manage as an operator.

Having applied PC pumps in countless applications for nearly three decades, I know what works, and this is a true revolution in technology. I can’t tell you how excited I am to see how HiCone will change the landscape in the positive displacement market.”
