Daisy Brand, a renowned dairy manufacturer, operates a production facility in Wooster, Ohio, that generates substantial volumes of wastewater sludge as a byproduct of its dairy production processes. The facility deals with two primary types of solids: anaerobic sludge from the wastewater treatment process and aerobic sludge from secondary treatment.

Challenges

Daisy Brand faced significant challenges in managing the large volumes of anaerobic and aerobic sludge streams. The high moisture content of the sludge led to increased volumes, which in turn resulted in escalating hauling costs. The existing dewatering methods were insufficient to reduce the sludge volume and moisture content effectively, prompting the need for a more efficient solution.

Solution

To address these challenges, Esmil conducted an on-site pilot test at Daisy Brand's facility using their advanced Multi-Disk Screw Press technology. After evaluating the performance of different models, the MDQ-454CS screw press was selected as the optimal solution. This model was chosen for its ability to handle large sludge volumes, its robust construction, and its efficiency in reducing sludge moisture content, leading to the production of a high-quality cake with significantly reduced moisture levels.

Performance outcomes

The installation of the MDQ-454CS screw press at Daisy Brand's facility resulted in substantial improvements in sludge management. Operating at a capacity of 100 gpm, the screw press effectively processed the sludge streams, which had an initial dry solids) content of 3-3.5%. The system was able to increase the dry solids content to 18-23%, depending on the sludge type. This significant reduction in moisture content directly translated into a reduced sludge volume, leading to considerable savings in hauling costs.

Equipment highlights

The comprehensive dewatering system installed at Daisy Brand included:

  • MDQ-454CS Multi-Disk Screw Press with control panel
  • Two screw conveyors
  • Progressive cavity sludge feed pump
  • Polymer feeder velodyne
  • Coagulant pump

The implementation of the MDQ-454CS Multi-Disk Screw Press has allowed Daisy Brand to optimize its sludge management process, achieving significant cost savings and operational efficiency. By effectively reducing the moisture content of the sludge, the company has minimized its hauling costs and improved the overall sustainability of its wastewater treatment operations. Esmil's solution has proven to be a reliable and efficient choice for Daisy Brand's dewatering needs.
